Mexican (or tex-mex) is one of my favorite types of cuisine, and luckily Charlotte is home to some great options! Situated in the heart of the Myers Park neighborhood, RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila features a wonderful menu and casual dining atmosphere. When the weather is mild the patio and outdoor bar space at RuRu’s is a hot spot during the week and weekend! Especially on a Tuesday, when RuRu’s has their Taco Tuesday special!
Located in an old mansion known as “The Villa,” the building is actually the historic Reynolds-Gourmajenko House. Following the passing of her first husband Mr. Reynolds, Blanche Reynolds (a native of Durham, North Carolina) built the only Tuscan villa in the Queen City (construction began in 1925) with the help of New York City architect William Lawrence Bottomley. Following the passing of Mr. Reynolds, Blance met Mr. Alexis Gourmajenko, a Russian emigre, in Italy during a tour of Europe. They were subsequently married and moved into the completed Tuscan revival home in the heart of Charlotte. Along with RuRu’s, The Villa is home to a number of boutiques and Stagioni Four Seasons of Food, an Italian family style restaurant that is at the top of my restaurant recommendations in Charlotte. (I had trouble finding the exact spelling of Gourmajenko - it either has a “u” or does not!)
So, what can you expect from RuRu’s? Great service and quality food and drinks in a casual but lively environment. My general rule of thumb is that if you’re going to eat Mexican food you have to have salsa, guacamole and queso - or some combination of two or three of these. Start with the Three Amigos and my favorite margarita, the Magic Mike. My favorite taco is the Stage Five Clinger. Ordering at RuRu’s is always entertaining because of the names of each item - you’re sure to get a good laugh hearing your friends order!
